Rugs woven flat
A kilim is a rug woven flat, without a pile: the weft threads of each color turn back at the edge of the motif, which is why its diagonals are stepped and its shapes have small slits. Anatolian kilims stack bands of hooked diamonds, zigzags and borders. Caucasian carpets, Kazak among them, have a large octagonal medallion with latch hooks and small ornaments in the corners. The Beni Ourain rugs of the Moroccan Atlas are a white wool pile with a lattice of black diamonds drawn in a loose hand. In the Peruvian Amazon the Shipibo-Konibo people paint and embroider kené, geometric designs of spirals, steps and parallel lines that are also sung.
Ornamatic draws general versions in the spirit of these textiles. They are not copies of any particular rug, and kené belongs to the Shipibo-Konibo; the spirals here are a small homage, not a reproduction.
How the generator builds them
The kilim, medallion and spiral are bitmaps, and their rows are drawn as joined rectangles, so there are no seams between knots. The kilim band stacks a zigzag, rows of dots and a stepped diamond, and alternates their colors and the offset of the diamonds. The medallion is a set of nested octagons in three colors, with latch hooks along the axes and small diamonds at the corners of the tile. The Berber lattice is made of double diagonal lines with an X or a small diamond in each cell, drawn as strokes. The spirals sit in framed squares, and neighbors are mirrored so their lines run on from cell to cell.
The tile is a whole number of cells in each direction, so the pattern repeats without a join.
