Screens built without nails
Kumiko is the Japanese craft of building screens, doors and transoms from thin strips of wood that are grooved and fitted together without nails. Small shaped pieces of wood are then set into the gaps to make flowers and stars. Related lattice screens, called mashrabiya, shade windows across the Arab world, and carry the same logic of strips and openings.
Ornamatic draws five generic lattices in this manner, and does not follow any single traditional kumiko pattern.
How the generator builds them
The lattice is a repeating set of thin strips, on a square or a triangular grid. A panel is fitted into each opening: a four-petal sesame flower, a cherry blossom, a plum blossom, a three-leaf sprig or an eight-point star. The strips can be solid or hollow, drawn as an outline with a thin line inside.
The grid wraps around the tile, so the pattern repeats exactly.
What you can adjust
- Pattern — sesame (goma), cherry blossom (sakura), plum blossom (ume), three-way (mitsukude) or mashrabiya stars.
- Strip width — from a hairline to a thick rail.
- Panel size — how fully the panels fill their openings.
- Petals — from three to nine.
- Strips — solid or hollow.
- Colors — a ground, the strips and the panels; any palette.
Export and use
