Azulejo and painted tile pattern generator
Square tiles laid edge to edge. Choose a rosette, Delft or encaustic layout, the number of petals and rings and the weight of the line, and export a seamless painted-tile pattern as SVG, PNG or CSS.

A wall of small pictures
Painted tile covers walls across the Mediterranean and beyond. In Portugal and Spain it is azulejo, in the Netherlands the blue-and-white Delft tile, and in Britain the encaustic floor, made of tiles inlaid with colored clay. Each tile is a small picture, and laid together the tiles make one large pattern in which new shapes appear at the corners.
Ornamatic draws simple versions of these in the manner of the tradition, and does not copy any single tile.
How the generator builds them
Each tile is a square with a rosette, a star or a ring of leaves painted on it. In the rosette style the tile is turned by a quarter each time it is laid, so four tiles together form a larger flower. The Delft style repeats a single tile, with a star in a circle and a pattern at the corners. In the encaustic style the colors swap on every second tile, as on a chessboard.
The tile edges can be drawn as a thin joint line or left out. The pattern wraps around, so it repeats exactly.
What you can adjust
- Style — rosette, Delft or encaustic.
- Petals — from three to nine.
- Rings — the number of concentric lines, from none to three.
- Line weight — a fine pen or a bold brush.
- Tile edges — the joints between the tiles, on or off.
- Colors — a ground and up to three paints; any palette.
