Patchwork and quilt pattern generator
Sew a quilt without the fabric. Choose a classic block — log cabin, Ohio star, pinwheel, churn dash, flying geese, nine patch — decide how the blocks are turned, add scrappy mixed fabrics, and export a seamless pattern as SVG, PNG or CSS.

What is a quilt block?
A patchwork quilt is made of repeated square blocks, and each block is itself pieced from a few simple shapes: squares, rectangles and triangles. Because every piece is a straight-edged shape on a small grid, the same block can be drawn in many fabrics and still be recognisable.
A log cabin block is built from strips (“logs”) laid round a small central square. A pinwheel is made of four triangles that turn like blades. Flying geese are triangles pointing in a row, the Ohio star has a star in the middle of a nine-square grid, and the churn dash mixes squares, triangles and rectangles.
How the generator builds them
Ornamatic divides a block into its pieces and gives each piece a colour from your palette. Blocks are then arranged on a grid, and the way each block is turned decides the look: all the same, in a chessboard, in groups of four around a common centre, or at random.
Turning log cabin blocks in fours is what creates the classic diamond and “barn raising” effects. The grid size is chosen so that the repeat closes, so the tile is seamless.
What you can adjust
- Block — triangles (half-square triangles), pinwheel, log cabin, flying geese, Ohio star, nine patch or churn dash.
- Layout — all the same, chessboard, in fours or random turns.
- Blocks per period — how many blocks fit in one tile.
- Log rounds — how many rounds of strips a log cabin has.
- Seams — the width of the stitching lines, drawn in the background colour.
- Scrappiness — the share of blocks sewn from other fabrics, as in a scrap quilt.
- Colours — any palette.
Export and use
Download the seamless tile as PNG or SVG, or copy a ready CSS background. The patterns you create are free to use, personally or commercially.
