Parquet and brick bond pattern generator

Lay a floor or a wall without the building site. Choose herringbone, chevron, basket weave or a brick bond, set the plank length and the joints, color the planks, and export a seamless pattern as SVG, PNG or CSS.

How are floors and walls laid?

Parquet and brickwork are built from one shape, a long rectangle, laid in a repeating arrangement. The arrangement has a name, and each name describes a rule rather than a look.

In herringbone, planks meet at right angles and form a zigzag that looks like a fish skeleton. Chevron uses planks with angled ends that meet in a clean V. Basket weave alternates square blocks of planks that run in different directions. In brickwork, a running bond shifts every row by half a brick; Flemish bond alternates a long brick (a stretcher) with a short end (a header) in every row; and English bond alternates whole rows of stretchers and rows of headers.

How the generator builds them

Every pattern is laid out on a grid whose unit is the plank width, and the length is a multiple of it. Ornamatic works out the smallest period in which the arrangement repeats exactly, places the planks, and lets planks that cross the edge continue on the other side, so the tile is seamless.

A joint of your chosen width is cut around every plank, and the background color shows through it like grout or the gap between boards. Planks are colored from your palette at random, in turn, or all the same.
